Book Review: Appealed by Emma Chase

Legal Briefs, #3
When Brent Mason looks at Kennedy Randolph, he doesn’t see the awkward, sweet girl who grew up next door. He sees a self-assured, stunning woman…who wants to crush the most intimate - and prized - parts of his anatomy beneath the heels of her Christian Louboutins.

Brent has never let the loss of his leg in a childhood accident affect his ability to lead a fulfilling life. He sets high goals–and then he reaches them.

And now he has his sights set on Kennedy.

When Kennedy looks at Brent Mason, all she sees is the selfish, Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue-worthy teenager who humiliated her in high school to join the popular crowd. A crowd that made those years a living hell.

She’s not a lovesick social outcast anymore - she’s a DC prosecutor with a long winning streak behind her. Brent is the opposing attorney in her next case and she thinks it’s time to put him through a little hell of his own.

But things aren’t exactly working out that way.

Because every fiery exchange has her wondering if he’s as passionate in the bedroom as he is in the courtroom. Each argument and objection only makes him want her more. In the end, Brent and Kennedy may just find themselves in love…or in contempt of court.

APPEALED is a sexy, humorous romance about first crushes, second chances and the final verdict of the heart.

This was another fantastic read from the rom-com queen! Emma Chase knows exactly how to make her readers laugh and swoon, and she does it perfectly with her characters' rapid-fire dialogue and scorching hot chemistry! The Legal Briefs series has been full of smart, witty, and sexy characters, so it was no surprise at all that I fell in love with the newest couple, Brent and Kennedy. Brent has been the fun "little brother" type so far, especially when compared to the power couple of Stanton and Sofia and knight-in-steely-armor Jake Becker. He's playful and 100% entertaining. I was excited to finally get Brent's point of view and to see how Kennedy Randolph, his childhood friend-turned-enemy, would push all of his buttons!
She throws up her hands and moves to the dooryway.
"See you tomorrow, angel," I call to her back.
A minute later, Harrison steps sedately into the room after seeing her to the front door.
"Angel?" he wonders.
"Sure." I raise my glass to my lips. "It was an angel who brought the plagues down on Egypt."
I started this book on a Friday morning, while sitting at the breakfast table. Really, it was just a fabulous way to kick off my weekend. I resumed reading later that night, with a big cup of tea in hand...and I could not stop until I finished at 1 AM! This is the kind of book that you will happily stay up all night for! The story pulls you in instantly. The pace is so addictive. You'll just want to keep going and going! Emma's sharp, quick-witted writing makes her characters jump off the page, and they will demand your complete and full attention.
Some people think it's weak to see a therapist--but they couldn't be more full of shit. It takes some big brass balls to bare your thought to another person. Your fears, faults, down-and-dirty desires. It's like a workout for the soul. It forces you to see yourself--the real you.
Friendships done right are my absolute favorite thing to read, and this Becker-Mason-Santos-Shaw combo is truly a wonderful thing. It was great having the whole group around in this book! The supporting cast shines just as brightly as the main stars! Whenever Brent shared a scene with his fellow lawyers (hey Jake *heart eyes*), I couldn't help but let out happy sighs or excited squeals. Again, the dialogue and chemistry. Emma just breathes life and personality into these characters. But...The others are all in serious relationships or have families now, which leads to the setup for Brent's story. He has a successful career, is wealthy and devilishly handsome...So what's missing from his life? What does he want/need?
"And what if...what if the reason I've never let myself fall in love with a woman is because I didn't have anything to give? Because I'd already given my heart to her when we were seventeen years old? And all these years...I've just been waiting for her to come back to me with it."
Enter: federal prosecutor Kennedy Randolph. I loved meeting feisty Kennedy! She walks back into Brent's life with sass and confidence, but she's got a major chip on her shoulder thanks to their complicated history. Once upon a time, these two were neighbors, friends, and in their mothers' eyes, a great match for each other. However, an incident in high school tore that relationship to shreds, and years and distance kept them apart. Kennedy is back now and wants to knock Brent on his ass. There's a competitive fire, one that burns a very fine line between professional and personal. ;) I loved how these two riled each other up! If you miss Drew and Kate from Emma Chase's Tangled series, and have been wanting something similar to that love/fight back-and-forth, you'll be extremely happy with the battles between Brent and Kennedy!
It's the perfect combination of sweet and evil. Delicious but deadly. A smile that says I'm going to destroy you--and you're going to love every fucking second of it.
Along with the heat and humor, though, there's also a significant theme that gives a very real heartbeat to this couple. It explores bullying, how we treat others, and how deep our criticizing words can cut...and leave scars. And for Brent, it's also about realizing what's important to you and standing up to protect those you care about. It was a new kind of defense for this attorney to learn. ;) It gave this already fantastic romance a very poignant, realistic, and heartwarming touch!
"I'm sorry, Kennedy."

Whatever she was going to say is lost in a breath. And there's a softening in her features, the slight curve of her mouth, the relaxing of her jaw that tells me she's relieved. That even if she didn't realize it, she's been waiting for this.
Yes, Brent and Kennedy are hilarious together. Yes, bedroom (and office *cough* ) scenes are heavenly. Plus, Brent in boyfriend mode? Really? *wide grin* The thing I enjoyed most, though, was seeing these two work out what happened in their past, seeing Brent mature and Kennedy let her walls down. Their reunion may have been tense--and it was never easy for either of them to risk their hearts for love--but in the end, Emma makes all of the hard fought battles worth it. Falling in love is worth it! There's even an UH-MAY-ZING happily ever after that wraps this series up beautifully. It's the kind that makes your heart flip out, with every line that you read. You love what's happening, but you hate that it means the journey is coming to its bittersweet end. *praise hands*  This author! This series!!!

I've loved these characters, from beginning to end, and all of the crazy rides they've taken my heart on! If you want that perfect blend of smart, funny, and sexy, I recommend that you get your hands on the Legal Briefs series immediately!

By day, Emma Chase is a devoted wife and mother of two who resides in a small, rural town in New Jersey. By night she is a keyboard crusader, toiling away the hours to bring her colorful characters and their endless antics to life. She has a long standing love/hate relationship with caffeine.

Emma is an avid reader. Before her children were born she was known to consume whole books in a single day. Writing has also always been a passion and with the 2013 release of her debut romantic comedy, Tangled, the ability to now call herself an author is nothing less than a dream come true.
