Book Review: Sustained by Emma Chase

Legal Briefs, #2
A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

In any series, in any group of characters, there always tends to be that one person who your heart belongs to from the get-go. And ever since Emma Chase introduced us to her team of high-powered attorneys in Overruled, Jake Becker was the one who stood out from the rest and grabbed my attention immediately. (Just as a side character!) He's the one whose story I've been waiting anxiously for, the one I've had the most anticipation for, so as soon as I had Sustained in my hands??? I was ecstatic to finally jump into Jake's point of view!

This is the first time ever that I've written a review for the blog and wanted to label a book 5+ stars. No doubt whatsoever. I just want it to rain bright, spectacular, deserves-all-the-awards stars. :D There isn't a single thing that I would want to change about Sustained--it's that amazing--and Jake Becker is undoubtedly Emma Chase's best hero yet.
"I had your card...and you seem like a good lawyer."

Out of curiosity, I ask, "What makes you think I'm good?"

She raises her chin and meets my eyes. "You look like a man who knows how to win a fight. That's what I need..."
Jake is the strong, intimidating type. (Two words: suits and tattoos. *prayer hands*) His point of view is fantastic--slick, intelligent, honest. Emma Chase is a master at making the male point of view refreshing and amusing, but also genuine! All throughout this novel, Jake will make you burst into fits of laughter, make you swoon, and make your heart utterly melt. I especially loved learning more about Jake's history, about the young bad boy who turned into a tough, disciplined attorney. He thinks he's "tarnished", but underneath all of that steely armor is a truly great man. He grows so much in the course of this novel and comes so far from the attitude we see in the very first chapter. He's protective, but has a gentler side. He's a badass lawyer, but you definitely get to see him when he's most vulnerable, too. There is so much to love about Jake Becker.
I want her--this fearless, stunning woman. And I want the kids. Those perfect, awful, amazing children--whom she loves with every inch of her soul. I want them to be mine. Mine to hold, mine to protect and teach...But even more than that, I want to deserve them. To be worthy.
I equally adored Chelsea and the whole McQuaid clan! My heart felt for her, felt for those kids. So. Damn. Much. As someone who is raising her own niece and nephew, I related to this situation on such a deeply personal level. Our circumstances are vastly different, but I still understood those core emotions. The determination, but also the uncertainty. The fear that goes hand in hand with loving someone so precious. There were countless scenes that struck a chord with me, quotes from Chelsea that felt like they were wrapping around my heart and just squeezing. She's young, but incredibly strong, doing the best she can while chaos whirls all around her. She was a character that I loved getting to know and that I loved rooting for.
And then she was here--so needed, all the time...She had to keep them from falling apart. And she had to do it completely on her own.
The family theme resonated in every page and was an exceptionally strong element in this novel. I loved watching Jake form a relationship with each of the kids and get closer to Chelsea. You really feel the bond develop between all of them, and then there was such a wonderful build-up for the couple. It was one of the most well-rounded, satisfying romances that I enjoyed this year! Sexy, yet sweet and heartfelt. The perfect amount of heat and electrifying chemistry, combined with the perfect amount of humor and endearing moments! I laughed out loud. I fell in love right along with the characters. And I was brought to tears. I was wholly invested, absolutely all-in, from start to finish.

The final verdict? Sustained was truly one of the best books in 2015. Perfection. An instant all-time favorite. (And Jake Becker is officially in my personal Romance Hero Hall of Fame!) This was a brilliantly written, full-of-life story, with a phenomenal cast of characters and a beautiful blend of love, friends, and family! I enjoyed every single page and could read hundreds more about life with Jake and Chelsea, happily! :) If you love contemporary romantic comedies, Sustained represents all of the best things about this genre, and I recommend putting it at the top of your reading list.

As a DC defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing – with his southern drawl, disarming smile and captivating green eyes – he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart and mother of his beloved ten-year old daughter. Jenny is getting married — to someone who isn’t him.

That's definitely not part of the plan.

Sofia Santos is a city raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her "friend with mind-blowing benefits" begs for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him – to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi – to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves.

Her head tells her she's crazy...and her heart says something else entirely.

What happens when you mix a one stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise and even the best laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.

By day, Emma Chase is a devoted wife and mother of two who resides in a small, rural town in New Jersey. By night she is a keyboard crusader, toiling away the hours to bring her colorful characters and their endless antics to life. She has a long standing love/hate relationship with caffeine.

Emma is an avid reader. Before her children were born she was known to consume whole books in a single day. Writing has also always been a passion and with the 2013 release of her debut romantic comedy, Tangled, the ability to now call herself an author is nothing less than a dream come true.
