Blog Tour Review: Intercepted by Emma Hart

This is the final novel in the By His Game series! I so enjoyed Emma Hart's writing once again! An alpha male and a headstrong heroine, a romance that has a great balance between sweet and sizzling hot, and a wild story? It's a formula that I won't be getting tired of anytime soon! By His Game, #3
Four people. Four goals. Four endings.

In the third and final book of the USA Today bestselling By His Game series, the rules of the game no one knew they’d have to play are blurring, and when the past becomes the opposing team, hearts aren’t the only thing at stake of being lost…

Finding naked pictures of her best friend on her boyfriend’s phone wasn’t in Everleigh White’s five year plan. Neither was moving back to Los Angeles, the city of dreams that never managed to make hers come true. There’s only so many years you can be in love with your best friend before you realize he’s never going to love you back, after all. If only her ex would stop showing up at the gym where she works, she’d be much happier.

Being a father at nineteen wasn’t how Reid North, the Vipers’ wide receiver, imagined his life going, but when his ex-girlfriend tricked him into parenthood, he accepted it. Eventually. Now, with his ex on the verge of being released from prison, he’s holding onto full custody of his seven year old son, Leo. Football and Leo have left Reid no time for dating… Until Everleigh comes back.

His best friend his whole life, Everleigh never knew Reid loved her. She left before he could tell her. Now she’s back in front of him, and he’s not letting go. Even if all he gets is her friendship again. But in a city like L.A., dreams come true when you’re least expecting it.

So do nightmares.

With their exes beating down their doors with demands and explanations, their hesitant and building relationship is threatened at every corner. They’re at serious risk of being intercepted by the past, and that’s a ball Reid is determined to catch.

Except desperation can lead to stupidity—and Reid soon realizes he can’t catch every ball, no matter how perfectly it’s thrown to him. This time a fumble could cost more than a few points.

It could cost him everything.

(INTERCEPTED is the third and final book in the By His Game series and can be read as a standalone, although it is advised to read BLINDSIDED and SIDELINED before, in this order.)

Throughout the book, Reid calls Everleigh his "firecracker" and it's honestly the best way to describe her. In true Emma Hart form, this heroine has a sharp tongue and a quick mouth. (Oh, the sass game is strong.) She's been betrayed by her boyfriend and best friend, but instead of wallowing, she's the kind of girl who refuses to go down like some sinking ship. There were times when I questioned her choices, didn't quite jump on board 100% with her attitude. But Ever is young and spunky, and I loved her more often than not!
I loved her. Fuck, did I love her. She was my best friend and my dream.
And Reid? *dreamy sigh* He's an alpha, dirty-talking football player! The bonus?!? We get to see his utterly sweet and vulnerable side when he turns on Single Dad mode! I think I even love Reid's chapters the best. GAH.
"Hey, Leo!" Reid calls over his shoulder. "You want Ever to come for dinner tomorrow night?"

"The pretty girl? Yeah!"
Ever and Reid were once the best of friends...and completely in love with each other. They just never came forward with the truth. An age gap--and Ever's decision to run off to New York--kept them apart for years. With Ever returning to Los Angeles, those old feelings resurface. I loved watching them work through their second chance. (It only took me 14% into the book to start leaving caps-locked notes in my Kindle!) With every teasing quip, the flirty banter, and the raw yearning from each of their point of views, I felt the bond build itself up again, get even stronger. From best friends to maybe something more? ;) They're two people who push each others buttons like crazy, but also care so deeply for each other! And of course...they have undeniably hot, combustible chemistry!
"I know every one of your buttons, firecracker. I know what pisses you off, where to tickle you to make you scream, an exactly what I have to do to make you give in. And you know I will, Ever. You know you'll give in."
One of the standouts for me was also Reid's son, Leo. He was cute and hilarious, and I absolutely adored any scene that he was in. (I'm pretty sure I highlighted any and every mention of him...) He brought out a softer and more tender side of both Reid and Ever. He helped put a lot of their feelings and doubts about a relationship into perspective.

Another standout was the element of suspense! Ever and Reid's unpredictable exes. For me, it was a good thing and a not-so-good thing. When Leo's birth mom, Claire, becomes a danger to them all, I felt like that unraveled predictably. But it was the subplot that I preferred...over a stalker fiasco with Ever. That provided angst, with great buildup, but the ultimate reveal didn't pack as big of a punch as I thought it would. Certain parts felt disjointed, so different from everything else going on. However, Emma Hart knows how to throw twists at her readers that turn everyone's worlds upside down!
Slowly, I look at Tom. "Perhaps it would be best if you leave now."

"New boyfriend?" he spits.

"No," Reid steps up behind him. He completely towers over my ex. His chin barely touches the top of Tom's head, and his shoulders spread inches wider, making his body bigger and more ripped than I thought. "I'm her best friend."
What counts most, though, is how Ever and Reid move on and find a way to make a life together. They realize how important they are to each other. Reid is spouting intense love sonnets. Ever speaks her mind in spectacular Everleigh White fashion. And there's a super sweet epilogue! It not only gives a happily ever after to Ever and Reid, it wraps up the whole series nicely!
"You've always been mine."
I so enjoyed Emma Hart's writing once again! An alpha male and a headstrong heroine, a romance that has a great balance between sweet and sizzling hot, and a wild story? It's a formula that I won't be getting tired of anytime soon! As usual, I'm looking forward to whatever novel this author will bang out next!

I pull some underwear out, complete with sweats and a loose T-shirt. I dress, much to Reid’s chagrin, and stand up. “I’m making coffee. Please get your fine ass out of bed right now.”

He flips over, shoving the quilt aside and showing me that fine ass. I grab the end of the bed and lean over, slapping my palm against the peachiness of his ass cheek.

“Ever!” he growls.

I laugh, hightailing it out of the bedroom. I pause halfway down the stairs to yell, “Your fault! Show me an ass like that and I’m gonna slap it!”

“Run, baby. I’m coming for you.”

Again, I laugh, flying down the rest of the stairs and into the kitchen. I haven’t even cleaned the coffee machine out before his footsteps thunder down the stairs and he appears in the kitchen. I shriek, grabbing the back of a chair in the middle of the room. Reid advances, his steps predatory, his gaze intense, and his smirk hot.

“You don’t wanna do this,” I warn, trying to contain my giggles. “I can run fast.”

“You know I run and mow down big-ass guys for a living, right? I’m also damn good at catching things.”

“But I’m neither a big-ass guy nor a thing,” I counter. “I’m a sexy little package that comes with thongs and garters.”

He stops for a second, and I use his surprise at my words to make a break for it. I run into the front room, but he’s hot on my heels, and I scream “No!” as his arms circle around my waist and we slam onto the sofa. My stomach hurts from laughing so hard, and Reid’s own deep rumble of laughter sends shivers across my skin.

“You’re an idiot,” I breathe, pushing at his shoulders.

“Twenty years and she’s still surprised,” he laughs, kissing the side of my head in a way that is so familiar yet means so much more now than it used to.

“Always surprised.” My reply is on a dying giggle, and I turn my head to the side.

The window faces the driveway, and as my gaze flits across it and the open drapes, I pause.

“Fuck knows why,” Reid says, still laughing.

Only, my laughter has died. “Get up,” I whisper, my stomach coiling with sickness.

“Up!” I shove at him and extract myself from his hold. I run to the front door, my breath hitching when I open it.

On my dashboard is a white rose. Like so many before it.

Only it isn’t.

This one is draped in red.
