Book Review: Hardcore Volume 1 by Staci Hart

Hardcore, #1
*** Part 1 of a 3 part serial ***

Cory James has never known a life where she wasn’t running. Running from the cops, her home, her past. Running from love. The only time she’s free is when she throws on her hood and takes to the roofs to become a part of New York, to climb to a place in the city where she doesn’t feel alone.

Stealing is nothing, lying inevitable, byproducts of survival. A way for Cory to provide for herself and for her younger sister, Jill, give her the life Cory couldn’t have. For five years, Cory set up a long line of teetering dominos, one by one, choice by choice.

Meeting Van is the first domino to fall, and once they crash into each other, it’s only a matter of time before her whole world is in danger of falling apart. She can tell herself over and again that she doesn’t care, but it’s a lie. She knows it from the first time she says his name, but she can’t let him in, not when she has a job to do, a job that could rip her life apart at the seams. One that she’ll have to betray Van to finish.

He’ll follow however high she can climb, but she can only run for so long before she has to choose.

Cory James is part of an all-female theft ring. They use their skills in parkour and freerunning to quickly escape the scene of the crime and to evade law enforcement. (Have you ever seen awesome videos of freerunning on YouTube??) From the get-go, I was drawn in by the agility and the athleticism! There were some great action sequences in this book, and it was so fresh and unique to read! It definitely gave me a good jolt and got those I am so into this-senses tingling! :D
No one spoke or paused. The rule was simple. When things got hot, it was every girl for herself.

The building in front of us was an easy climb with jutting bricks at intervals in a pattern, and I could see every hold I'd need to get me to the top. I ran full sprint, took three steps up the wall and grabbed a brick easily, climbing to the roof like it was nothing.
I love that Cory was a tough, edgier female character, but she had one important reason for everything she did: her younger sister. You get to see Cory's determination, as she tries to make up for their difficult childhood and to provide for the only family she cares about. Although she shields her sister from the truth about her lifestyle, Cory continues to pay Jill's tuition, wanting her to have a better, brighter future.
"I'll do you proud. I'll make it worth it for you."

"Lemme tell you a little secret." I looked her in the eye. "You already have." My chest ached at the version of what I could have been if I'd had the opportunity, all shiny and fresh and ready for the world instead of dark and mangled and beaten down from it.
But, after running for so long and keeping up her lies, Cory finally gets an unexpected break: Van. Van drew me in just as much, and I thought he was such an interesting match for Cory! Artistic, charming, physical. You'll have to read to learn more details about him, though, because that's part of the fun! It's the thrill of the chase! Literally. ;) It was hot, and wild, and I loved it!
He stood on a wide ledge ahead of me with his hands on his hips, his shoulders heaving as he caught his breath. His body was a silhouette against the lights of the buildings that stretched up around us. He was a god or a superhero, something out of a myth or legend, too good to be true. Too good to be mine.
My biggest problem with starting serials is usually that the first installment can be too much of a tease, not offering enough about the story or the characters to make me feel like I actually read something worth it. However, I was incredibly satisfied when I finished volume one of Hardcore. A lot happens in the span of 80 pages! That ending had me on the edge of my seat!
This is how you run a con. You give enough of yourself, of your honesty, to convince them that you are what you say.
If you're looking for your next adrenaline rush, check out Hardcore! It's a twist of speed, sex, and lies! ;) Volume one was such an exhilarating start for this serial! A great, fast-paced read, with compelling writing and a strong cast of characters. I just know that I want more more more!

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life: a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, even though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. Her favorite word starts with f and ends with k.

From roots in Houston, to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she's not writing, she's sleeping, cleaning, or designing graphics.
