New Release & Author Interview: After the Rain by Renee Carlino

From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Sweet Thing and Nowhere But Here comes a deeply emotional contemporary romance about the second chances waiting beyond the shattered dreams of youth.
Under the bright arena lights of a rodeo show, young Avelina Belo falls for a handsome cowboy with a larger-than-life personality. After a whirlwind courtship, she happily moves away from her family in northern California and settles into married life with her cowboy on a seven-thousand-acre cattle ranch in Montana. One freak accident later, Avelina’s hopes for the future come to an end.
Nate Myers graduated from UCLA medical school at the top of his class, ready to follow in the footsteps of his father, a superstar cardiothoracic surgeon. Six years later, Nate’s career is being ruined by a malpractice suit. Questioning himself for the first time, he retreats to a Montana cattle ranch to visit his uncle and gain perspective. There, he meets a beautiful young woman named Avelina who teaches him more than he ever knew about matters of the heart.

I absolutely love this author, and I'm so excited to share this Q&A! We talk about her new book deal, writing, and, of course, After the Rain!

Jullie: You recently announced three more books with Atria. Congratulations! How did you celebrate the new deal? :)

Renee: Yes, I am doing three new books with Atria. I am absolutely thrilled to be doing more with my same editor. I  celebrated by taking my family out to dinner and then coming home and wrapping up the first book in the deal.  Writing is always my celebration. :)

Jullie: In all of your novels, I've always loved how you bring your stories' settings to life. Have you traveled anywhere recently that you absolutely fell in love with? Maybe gave you a little inspiration?

Renee: After the Rain was completely inspired by a trip I took to Montana in 2006. It wasn't that recent, but I met a heart doctor there who was from LA.  He was the inspiration for Nate and the story surrounding his decision to move to Montana. So, yes my travels definitely inspire my characters and story.

Jullie: Another thing I love about your books...I'll that the covers are gorgeous. After the Rain's cover is gorgeous. What's the process like for you, creating the right cover for the story, and what's it like when you first lay eyes on the finished product?

Renee: My editor and I come up with a concept or overall feel for what we think the cover should look like.  That is taken to the wonderful artists who design covers for my publisher, and usually they hit the mark, and we love the covers just as much as the audience.

Jullie: How was the writing process this time around, for After the Rain? Any made-you-cry scenes or this-is-SO-FUN-to write scenes...

Renee: Always sad or tragic scenes make me cry. I usually love writing emotional scenes even if they are a little bit personal.  I guess because that's what makes writing so cathartic for me.  It's my therapy.

Jullie: Last but not least...If you could give a tiny clue to how your couple in AtR may be different from your previous books? Or perhaps something about their story that your readers could look forward to? :)

Renee: There are two couples in After the Rain, and I can tell you that one character experiences a very serious accident.  That accident happened to me as a child, taken directly from life.  The only difference was that our injuries were different, and some of the circumstances surrounding it were different, but other than that, the event was almost exactly the same.

Jullie: Thank you so much for spending time to answer these questions, Renee! And I hope everyone enjoys After the Rain!!!
