Book Review: Black Lies by Alessandra Torre

Became a tech billionaire by his twentieth birthday. Has been in a relationship with me for 3 years.
Has proposed 4 times. Been rejected 4 times.

Cuts grass when he’s not banging housewives. Good with his hands, his mouth, and his cock. Has been pursued relentlessly by me for almost 2 years, whether he knows it or not.

Go ahead. Judge me. You have no idea what my love entails.

If you think you’ve heard this story before, trust me – you haven’t.

I love a book that keeps the gears in my head constantly churning.
I love a book that makes me sit up straight and pay attention.
And I love a book that can blow my mind and suddenly make me second-guess everything I'd assumed to know.
I love Black Lies.
This was a brilliant and beautifully written novel, and it was captivating from page one to book close. *hallelujah-hands in the air* The storytelling had finesse. It was illustrative, but never excessive. Deliberate, without moving too slowly. Alessandra Torre has given us her own little Rubik's cube, with multiple moving pieces--love, sex, secrets--all blended together until re-aligned to reveal one spellbinding masterpiece. It was the kind of story that I immediately wanted to go back and read. Ten more times.
The mirror showed the woman I had been raised to be. Designer gown that was subtle yet sophisticated. A polished exterior, from my hair to my heels. I stared at my shell and wondered why I couldn't break from it.
Layana Fairmont was born into a world of fortune and privilege, seemingly destined to be nothing more than a trophy housewife. This woman is well-educated and oozes sophistication. Ultimately, though, she craves things outside of the cold confines of high society--things like real love, passion, and freedom.
Then, this San Francisco socialite meets a genius tech billionaire. Brant Sharp is an inventor, an innovator. Along with his wealth, intelligence, and good looks, his complete adoration for Layana and his quiet intensity made it easy to swoon!
This. This was what every woman was looking for. A mouth that responded hungrily yet tenderly when kissed.
But this seemingly perfect man...he has a secret. Something that Torre dangles in front of you, constantly reminds you that there's something you don't know and have to be patient to find out. The slow unraveling of the past kept me on pins and needles. It was what I imagine standing on cracked glass would feel like! You see the shatter coming, but all you can do is wait for the drop, when the ground is taken out from under you and everything changes. Layana and Brant's relationship eventually began to change. And as I witnessed this shift, I kept asking, "WHAT. IS. THE. SECRET?!"

Then, Layana meets Lee. Lee is a "refreshing change" from Brant. Everything about him, from the get-go, is raw and feverish, dirty and hard, filthy and rough. This affair made me pull back in hesitation, but it also pulled me in! Tempting, but with red flags waving from the start.
"You know what I think you need?" He pushed into my hand. "Is to be bad."
I swallowed a mouthful of lust. "Then make me bad."
"I'll make you worse."
Going from Brant to Lee is like reaching for a shot of cheap tequila after you've been sipping on fine, well-aged whiskey. The downgrade doesn't quite make sense, but before you know it, you're just drunk on how good and wild Lee makes Layana feel.

So, who does she choose? How is she supposed to choose?! And what's the fallout for Brant and Lee?!? You'll make judgments. You'll maybe even try to rationalize. You'll form theories. You'll definitely ask a million questions (because I did all of the above)...The truth, however, is a mind-fuck. A pure, electrifying mind-fuck.
I wanted to kick at the support beams of all that he knew. Expose the truth behind all of this. Tell him everything. And see if he survived. See if he stayed.
It was time. I needed to rip the roof off all of our lies.
It was stunning and complex, and it was clever craftsmanship at its best. The Rubik's cube. I was frantically rehashing previous scenes, picking out where the hints had been. And once I fully processed the extent of the truth, the knots in my stomach only tightened even more. My heart beat faster with an intoxicating blend of awe and aching. All of the little "Oh! So that means _____!" were going off, one after the other, click click click.
I step forward, pressing every piece of me against him, wanting to crawl into and hug his broken, terrified heart.
I finished the book at 4 am, and it made me burst through the door of my reading cave like a madwoman, shouting, "HOLY %$&@." I wanted to shout-talk about Black Lies, right away, with anyone who would listen. (I may have even called my best friend, my sister, AND my mother just to give a verbal recap...) Yes, you have to endure the whirlwind first, but yes, there's a satisfying calm after the storm! All of the nerve-fraying and head-spinning...Alessandra Torre makes it all worth it!
"It was worth it as soon as I saw you."
