Blog Tour: Make It A Double by Sawyer Bennett

Brody Markham has endured a nightmare, spending the last five years in prison and losing everything that was dear to him. Now he’s back home, trying to survive in a world he doesn’t recognize anymore. While his family and friends desperately try to reach through to him, he shelters himself further and further away from their love.

Alyssa Myers has worked her entire life to distance herself from the luxurious and privileged lifestyle in which she was raised. Running her non-profit agency, The Haven, she is content to spend her days helping abused animals find sanctuary, which fulfills her in a way that money just can’t buy.

Maybe it’s that she recognizes in Brody some of the same characteristics she sees in her homeless wards, but Alyssa is powerless to stop her personal quest to make Brody whole again.

While Brody struggles to surface from the darkness, Alyssa tries to protect
her heart in case he’s not willing to accept the light that she offers him.

I really enjoyed this book! For me, it was such a heartwarming comfort-read! I loved the cast of characters, the setting, and the sweet romance, but there were just enough surprises to keep me on my toes.

Although Brody was convicted of a crime and locked up for a very long time, there was still a softer side to him. He had a sense of responsibility, and as the story went on, I saw how caring and protective he really was. (Actually from my Kindle notes: "Protective Brody Bear!") The heroine, Alyssa, saw something in Brody and gave him the second chance at life that he really needed. Her character was so compassionate, generous, and just...soothing

At first, Brody and Alyssa get off on the wrong foot. It's an unfortunate misunderstanding, but surprisingly, it doesn't last very long. Because they're able to talk through it and even help each other out! And that's what I loved most about their relationship, as well! It developed steadily and naturally, without excess drama between the couple themselves and getting in their own way. While working together at The Haven, taking care of the animals and each other, their bond and chemistry only grew stronger. They had their sweet moments, funny ones, and of course, the right amount of steamy ones. ;)
"Oh, God," I say, bringing my hand up to cover my mouth in dramatic fashion, my eyes wide with horror. "It was in that place just above bad, but right below mediocre...that dreaded zone where you had some hope of improvement from bad, but because you can't make it past mediocre that means you're a lost cause."
"For fuck's sake, Alyssa, it was a fucking fantastic kiss," Brody yells at me.
That's what I was waiting for.
Hoping for, really.
All the while, they're surrounded by their best friends and loved ones, in the beachside community of Nags Head, North Carolina. I was instantly drawn to this tight-knit circle of truly loyal and loving people. It showed when the girls got together for breakfast every week (yay girl talk!), in the brotherly ribbing from Hunter, and every time they banded together for support. Then, there was Wyatt. Detective Wyatt Banks. For some reason, I loved this "side" character the most! (Also from my Kindle notes: "I love Wyatt." *scrolls down not too far* "I. LOVE. WYATT.") You'll see what I mean if you read this book, but he did the simplest things, and...yeah, he kinda made this girl swoon a bit! :) Every single one in the group, though, added to the small-hometown charm. I adored that they were genuinely good people.
"I want to spend the rest of my life with the woman that taught me how to love again. Taught me how to be free. Taught me how to live."
So, all of that only made the ending that much more emotional. It made the "villains" in this story easy to detest, because of the pain and suffering they were causing my "good guys". There was an element of suspense that I wasn't expecting, but liked, and it brought everyone together! A beautiful, heartrending scene between all of the characters even got me a little misty-eyed. It was the peaceful, incredibly moving kind of "emotional".
Brushing his thumb over my lower lip, he pulls me down to kiss me. It's filled with so much love and tenderness that my heart stops...memorizes the moment, and then starts to a strong, responsive beat again.
Ultimately, it all led to a fantastic happily ever after! I mean, "SQUEALING because this is PRETTY DAMN CUTE"-fantastic. It was the best feel-good ending for this feel-good story! A perfect blend of tugging at my heartstrings yet making me happy-sigh! And, after enjoying Brody's story, I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the Last Call series!
