Book Review: Hothouse Flower by Krista & Becca Ritchie (Pinterest Board & Playlist!)

Calloway Sisters, #2
+Goodreads
Ryke Meadows, meet Daisy Calloway ... she’s all grown up.

Twenty-five-year-old Ryke Meadows knows he’s hard to love. With a billion-dollar inheritance, a track-star resume, and an alpha-male personality—he redefines the term likable asshole. But he’s not living to make friends. Or enemies. He just wants to free climb three of the toughest mountains in Yosemite without drama or interruption.

And then he receives a distressed call from a girl in Paris—a girl that he has never been allowed to have.

Daisy Calloway is eighteen. Finally. With her newfound independence, she can say goodbye to her overbearing mother and continue her modeling career. Next stop, Paris. Fashion Week begins with a bang, and Daisy uncovers the ugly reality of the industry. She wants to prove to her family that she can live on her own, but when everything spirals out of control, she turns to Ryke to keep her secrets.

As Daisy struggles to make sense of this new world and her freedom, she pushes the limits and fearlessly rides the edge. Ryke knows there’s deep hurt beneath every impulsive action. He must keep up with Daisy, and if he lets her go, her favorite motto—“live as if you’ll die today”—may just come true.

Hothouse Flower is a spin-off of the Addicted series. Kiss the Sky is required before reading, and we strongly recommend reading the Addicted series before this spin-off.

Have you ever gone highlighter-happy on your Kindle? Yes? *high five* If you've read any of the Addicted books by Krista & Becca Ritchie, your answer is probably somewhere on a scale of Duh, obviously to Yup, the whole damn book. There were chapters in this latest novel, Hothouse Flower, where I nearly highlighted the entire thing, a rainbow of blue, pink, and yellow. (Daisy would've loved it...) And yes, I color code my quotes. (Rose would approve.) I'm just so completely awestruck by these authors' originality and storytelling. I could print my favorite, passages...on posters, frame them, and hang each one on every wall in my house. Like this, for example:
Her eyes lock on me, and she whispers, "Big bad wolf, are you going to eat me?"
You're a dirty girl, Calloway. My gaze drops to her mouth. "Until you fucking scream."
Oh, whoops, too much?! *squeals then covers mouth* Okay, maybe not that one. My house guests might go bug-eyed, and I'd probably be reduced to a hot mess every time I passed it in a hallway and remembered *that* scene.

So, what is it about Hothouse Flower that has thrown me into a complete, unabashed book-hangover?? Aside from Daisy and Ryke themselves, there were three things about this story that locked me in and refused to let go until the ride was over: adventure, love, and healing.

#1: Adventure. Daisy and Ryke's voices were so much fun to read. Ryke Meadows is full of snark and f-bombs, but he doesn't care what anybody thinks or says about him. This guy has the motorcycle, likes to run, and climbs mountains. And what about Daisy? Daisy is my favorite Calloway sister. Yeah, I said it! Not because we share a birthday or anything...or because I'm a baker and she's obsessed with chocolate cake...I love Daisy for her youthful curiosity and her exuberance. There's a whimsicality to her character, the daredevil with quirks. If I could, I would go shopping for the craziest t-shirts, explore a foreign country, and jump in for a midnight swim with this girl!
You're wild and daring and so fucking crazy.
I want to hear you fucking roar, Calloway.
Considering how these authors like to keep their readers on their toes, though, the crazy twists and gut-wrenching spins were a given! Hothouse Flower taps into your inner wanderlust and takes you all over the place, from Philly to Paris to California. Oh, and that trip is one you'll want to take over...and over...and over again. You won't be able to think of road trips, or camping, or cornfields on the side of the highway the same way. Ever. *grinning and blushing to the max

The Six Musketeers reunite, too. The bromantic banter between Ryke, Lo, and Connor alone was A+ quality because I giggle-snorted way too much. (The irony of wanting to use the expression, "I would give these guys their own reality show"...) When this group is together, the dialogue is just so clever and fluid. No offense real-life friends, but I want my own Connor Cobalt. And Loren Hale. And Ry- okay, you get my point.  Since I'm not opposed to sacrificing sleep and human contact in the name of book love, this book was the bring-my-Kindle-wherever-I-go-whatever-I-do kind. I didn't want the adventure to end, and ny heart was on fire for Ryke and Daisy!
I'm racing towards her when I should be slamming on the fucking brakes.
I know how to stop.
But I'm not going to.
I don't want to.
That's the fucking truth.
Ryke is 25 years old. Daisy is only 18. Daisy is also Ryke's little brother's girlfriend's little sister. Daisy's mother also can't stand Ryke...Do you see why "complicated" and "angsty angst" would be understatements here? Yet, it's all of that build-up that makes this romance *so* *damn* *good*. This relationship is 3 books and a few story-years in the making! We all got to watch their friendship grow into something deep and strong. By this point, they know each other so well. From the way Ryke protects and takes care of Daisy to all of the teasing, mischievous back-and-forth, I lost count of all the cute little moments. Finally, in Hothouse Flower, their chemistry lights up and burns the pages, leaving Holy craps and Wows in its wake. FI-NA-LLY. I'm talking about scenes that I had to slow motion read, go back, and read 'em again. For emphasis.
We've crossed one boundary, and I know we're both the type of people to never slow down, to run around the bases at high speed. I want that with him. To freakin' make a home run like we're track stars on a baseball field.
Along with the adventure and the romance, though, there's a beautiful story of healing. Daisy has her own demons hidden underneath her bright, playful exterior, and Ryke is avoiding dealing with a painful past. I loved how they were together. Ryke was her unfaltering safe zone, and Daisy was the light to his dark. The way they get through that journey, with the help of their little family in Lily, Lo, Rose, and Connor, is so perfectly crafted by authors Krista and Becca. I loved being there for every excruciating and exquisite moment. Past all of the humor and smart-ass banter, there is a deeper connection between all of them. There were times when I was legitimately misty-eyed over these characters!

I was all in for Ryke and Daisy's story, and when I finished reading Hothouse Flower, I was out of my mind with how amazing the book was. Incoherent. Unable to put non-corny sentences together. 5 stars for Daisy, 5 stars for Ryke, 5 stars for adventure...No...I give the whole sun to Hothouse Flower. Please accept my offering, Krista and Becca, and write another book for Ryke and Daisy. I heard somewhere that Daisy Calloway is powered by the sun. ;)

"You ready for a fucking adventure, sweetheart?"

Krista & Becca Ritchie have their own Pinterest account, with boards for the entire Addicted Series and all of the main characters. It's amazing. If I had a board filled with all of the things that reminded me of Hothouse Flower, Daisy, and Ryke...this is what part of it would look like!

Music is one of the best ways to soothe a book hangover, and these songs also helped soothe my Raisy withdrawals. ;)

Track 01. "Forever Young" by Youth Group (Cover)
"Let's dance in style, let's dance for a while
Heaven can wait, we're only watching the skies
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst
Are you gonna drop the bomb or not?"

Track 02. "On Top Of The World" by Imagine Dragons
"I’ve had the highest mountains
You can have it all but life keeps moving

I take it in but don’t look down

‘Cause I’m on top of the world, ‘ay
I’m on top of the world, ‘ay
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I’ve been waiting to smile, ‘ay
Been holding it in for a while, ‘ay"

Track 03. "All The Way" by Timeflies
"I know you hold back but just let it go,
'Cause I just won't stand to watch you walk alone,
Don't be afraid, you're not on your own
As long as you know we'll be alright

When I love someone, I'm loving all the way
You know I'm the one to take you all the way"

Track 04. "Try To Sleep" by Low
"You try to sleep
'cause there's never enough
You try to sleep
But then you never wake up

Try to sleep
Don't look at the camera
Try to sleep"

"All my life I stepped to the rhythm of the drums inside my head
Longing for the sweet sound that could make my heart sing"

Track 06. "Good Life" by Rock Mafia
"I live in a world where happiness is on the screen
An anonymous can be so mean
I pray for all the human beings
That we all know what it really means
To care about somebody else more than you do for yourself
Your family, your friends"

Track 07. "Paradise" by Tove Lo
"Said I want you for a million days
You say you want the same with me
With love for real without the lies
Is that what they call paradise?"

Track 08. "Bedroom Wall" by Banks
"My arms are open for you look at me now
Baby if you want you got me
I know you're broken darling and I won't let you down
Baby I've been waiting for you

I know you like acting like you don't care
But I can be distant don't want to be distant anymore
Darling look at me standing here
This is my promise, cross my heart promise, this is all yours"

Track 09. "This Is What It Feels Like" by Banks
"I hang on everything that you say
You know I can see all the things that imply
You secretly are in love
And finally when I let myself fall hard for you
I see you trying to pretend

Bring it down, bring it on
Bring it now, bring it on
This is what it feels like now

I caught you off guard
And then when you saw I felt the same
You pulled away
Started acting like being with me was too hard
This is what it feels like"

Track 10. "Sleep Baby Sleep" by Broods
"Sleep baby sleep
What are you waiting for?
The morning's on its way
You know it's only just a dream
Oh sleep baby sleep
I lie next to you
The beauty of this mess is that it brings me close to you"
