Book Review: Interview with a Master by Jason Luke

It's the interview like no other.
It's the interview of a lifetime.
It's THE Interview with a Master.
When Jonah Noble reveals details of his life within the world of BDSM, the tale he tells is intensely erotic, profoundly sensual, and brutally honest.
This is His world. His way.
There is only one question the man will not answer…

"Anticipation," I said the magic word.

I'll be honest here. I had not read any BDSM-based books before this one. (Not even a particular trilogy that everyone else on the planet has read...Not yet, at least!) So, this book had me on curiosity and anticipation alone. According to several blog interviews, many scenes and characters are inspired by Luke's own experiences in the lifestyle. Luke built a mysterious hype around his new novel. It was quite simply...fascinating and irresistible. Before I knew it, I was 1-clicking and downloading to my Kindle...subconsciously clutching my teacup and pearls (okay, the teacup was real, but the pearls were very much proverbial), wondering How the hell did I end up with a BDSM erotica? So, bravo, Jason Luke. You, sir, are just full of magic words.

Reading Interview with a Master was an experience for sure. It was quite the opposite of what someone who is completely unfamiliar with the lifestyle (oh hey, like myself) might expect, nothing shockingly dark or wince-inducing. I believe the plot is best experienced when you know as little detail as possible and go in with a mental blank slate, but I will say that it's easy enough to follow and you certainly don't need to be a BDSM "expert" to understand the story. Therein lies the beauty of the interview.

Jonah Noble is a "master," a dominant. He exudes a seductive confidence that demands your attention. Considering this is told from a man's POV, there's a lack of typical "swoon-worthy" physical descriptions. The reader is left to fall for the way Jonah carries himself, his words and thoughts, and his...skills. Take away the BDSM "taboo," though, and he's just a confident, wealthy man that any woman could fall for. Complete with winks and wolfish grins.
"What?" she was incredulous and disbelieving. "He let you in?"
"That's right."
"You...you...bribed the man?"
"No," I smiled lazily. "I own the building."
Throughout the course of the interview, Jonah details his path to becoming a master, reliving scenes of sexual exploration and ecstasy. He also divulges his beliefs about dom/sub relationships. His rules, his way of doing things. But again, strip away the BDSM categorization, and you've got some highly quotable advice that everyday relationships can relate to. At one point, Jonah tells Leticia, "Write this down. I think it's important." I read it as: "Highlight this. I think it's important."
"Don't romanticize the lifestyle, Leticia," I said. "Don't build it up in your mind to be something that it isn't. BDSM isn't the solution to every relationship in trouble, it's not the answer for every lonely girl looking for love, and it's not all about charming doms and beautiful breathless subs..."
However, not once does Jonah sound like he's preaching a How-To. The author isn't trying to convince you that Jonah's story is an end-all, be-all. You can agree or disagree with him because his opinions aren't meant to be final, just his. In fact, Jonah is persistent in pointing out that these are just his rules, but every BDSM relationship can be different.
"So, are you speaking as an expert, Mr. Noble?" Leticia's tone had turned decidedly frosty.
"No," I admitted. "I'm merely speaking as a man who has had enough arguments to recognize the pattern."
The author claims that he just wanted to write something entertaining and that any connections readers make to Jonah's insight are just a bonus. Well, congratulations Jason, look at all your bonuses...*checks Popular Highlights, smirks* Jonah had such a distinct voice!
It's not any one thing about a woman that makes her sexy in my eyes, it's a collection of things - an intoxicating fusion of the obvious and the subtle that merge together.
And what about the lucky reporter getting all of these juicy details? Leticia Fall is a small-town girl in a big city, still trying to climb her way up the journalism ladder. I liked that she was oblivious to certain aspects of BDSM, but it wasn't because she was particularly virtuous or "above it." Jonah actually coaxes out that curious, sensual side of her...and it is oooh, wow to see play out. (*Cough* HANDCUFF SCENE *Cough* Oh, sorry, what...)
"I want you to come to my place tonight," I said. "Eight o'clock."
"And what if I have plans? It's Saturday night."
"Break them," I said, and my expression was serious. "There are some things I want to show you."
Their fascination with each other progresses throughout the novel, and it's part of what makes this story so addicting. Not only did I want to know all about Jonah's past, I wanted to see what would go down between Jonah and Leticia in the present. I was swiping page after page, unable to put it down because I just wanted more!
"But you're Jonah Noble. You're larger than life. You can't expect people to believe your story is ordinary. It's not - and neither are you."
But, oh, how I wanted more. After I got through the ending, I actually had to cross my arms and stare at my Kindle for a couple of minutes, trying to figure out how I felt about it. It all spiraled down to the finish rather quickly, and this was not a traditional happily ever after! I will give credit to Jason Luke, though. It was a helluva twist! This was different, a risky choice for me, but it was highly entertaining and emotionally captivating from beginning to end.

Jonah Noble is one powerful, seductive Master, and you're going to wish that you were conducting this interview! Senses will be at an all-time high after reading every detail, and you will not want to put this book down!
